From Maurice:

The wind whispers that Nick and Susie got married a few weeks ago in a small, private ceremony. Various Bad Seeds will be flying in to London for the October 9th "blessing" ceremony. Apparently, this is why Nick cancelled the October 10th show in the Netherlands.

NICK CAVE's spoken-word CD of readings from his 1988 novel 'And The Ass Saw The Angel' - previously only available through mail order - will be on general release by Mute Records on October 11. The readings from the book - originally given away as a bonus CD with 'Tender Prey' - is accompanied by Mick Harvey and Ed Clayton Jones's music for a Sydney theatre production based on the book.

Apart from some possible European festival shows, Nick Cave has no other plans for the rest of the year.

Plans

From Anders Gullestad

BA, one of my local newspapers, had a short interview with NC&tBS Manager Rayner Jesson yesterday. Here are the most important bits:

Nick will start to practice and record demos with the Bad Seeds at the end of the year (which suggests/ hopefully means that the next album will be NCBS and not just NC).

1999 has been a year off for Nick (like we didn't know that already). His private life was messed up, and he needed to get away from his routines, but now he's feeling much better (thanks to miss Bicks, probably), and is keeping sober.

Nick's decided that since he's only doing a few live shows this year, he wants them all to be first class. Jesson stresses that it's unique for NC to do three shows in two days (Bergen Blues and Roots Festival, 1st and 2nd of May in Norway), but he's doing it because he likes the philosophy behind the BBRF.

Release
Plans

From Maurice:

There will be a new live Birthday Party album out. Material from London 81 (Drunk On the Pope's Blood) gig, Bremen 82 (from a famous bootleg) and at least "Funhouse" from Athens 1982 with Jim "Foetus" Thirlwell on sax.

Earlier, Feb 99 was mentioned as release date, as well as April 99. I have reliable info that the CD has been mastered in March.

General
Notes

From The (London) Times 13 Feb 1999:

Pop stars want to be write-on

Sensitive pop stars are throwing down drumsticks and microphone stands in favour of fountain pens and feint-ruled exercise books for the delights of Litpop. Not always known for its intellectual stamina and wide vocabulary, the rock world is creating novels, short stories and poetry.

[... bla, bla, bla, U2&Rushdie ... Robbie Williams ...]

Some of the writing can be quite good. Nick Cave, the Australian singer-songwriter who led the way in 1996 with his acclaimed novel And the Ass Saw the Angel, is giving a solo performance in the form of a lecture at the Royal Festival Hall in March. As organiser of this year's Meltdown Festival in May, Cave is also making sure that there will be book-readings as well as music.

[... Belle & Sebastina ...]

Even pop stars who were writing writing before they played guitar are given a hard time for their literary aspirations. Cave thinks it is difficult to transcend the image projected on to them. He said: "It's a bit like singers being in movies. It's a very dangerous area really.

"When I wrote my book there was a hierarchy that existed and it was outragious to think that a rock star could ever write a novel. Part of what fuelled me is that everyone said I couldn't do it and in those days I had something to prove."

The rest of the article mentions Bono, KLF, Martin Amis, Michael Stipe and Diamanda Galas. The first three stanzas of Junkyard are printed under the heading: Nick Cave, the Australian singer, wrote a poem which appears in the anthology called "King Ink". There is a not too cool picture of Nick in his ugly leatherjacket, too.

(Thanks to Dirk R.)

Performance
News

From NME, 5 Feb 99

NICK CAVE will be hosting this year's Meltdown Festival, to be held over two weeks at London's Royal Festival Hall starting on June 24.

The singer, author and actor will choose the bill and work with organisers to shape Meltdown 99, the seventh to be held at the South Bank venue. Last year's event was hosted by John Peel.

Organiser David Sefton said: "We asked Nick to do it because he's got such a diverse range of talents and he's done so many different things.

It will be very diverse, which is what Meltdown is all about." Cave and Meltdown organisers are now working on securing the artists they have on their shortlist.

(Thanks Oliver)
